Couples Therapy

How do I know if Couples therapy is right for me?

Couples therapy can be beneficial for couples at any stage of their relationship, whether they are experiencing specific problems or simply want to enhance their connection and prevent future issues. It can address a wide range of concerns, including infidelity, financial disagreements, parenting differences, sexual issues, and communication breakdowns.

Consultation Call:

Couples will be provided with a 20-minute consultation with the provider to determine the best fit and what services are recommended and duration based on the clinician’s clinical recommendation.

Couples therapy and family therapy are both forms of psychotherapy aimed at improving relationships, but they differ in focus and scope.

Couples Therapy:

  • Couples therapy, as the name suggests, is specifically designed to address the dynamics between two people in an intimate relationship, typically romantic partners or spouses.

  • It focuses primarily on the relationship between the couple, exploring communication patterns, conflict resolution skills, intimacy issues, and other factors that impact the couple's relationship.

  • The goal of couple’s therapy is to improve the relationship satisfaction and functioning of the couple by enhancing their understanding of each other, resolving conflicts, and developing healthier ways of relating.

Why does insurance not cover Couples Therapy?
Insurance Policies: Many insurance policies have limitations or exclusions on coverage for couple’s therapy. They may only cover therapy for diagnosable mental health conditions, and since couple’s therapy typically focuses on relationship issues rather than individual mental health diagnoses, it may not meet the criteria for coverage.

  • Medical Necessity
Insurers often require that services be deemed medically necessary to qualify for coverage. While individual therapy may be medically necessary for treating mental health disorders, couples therapy may not always meet this requirement in the eyes of insurers.

  • Lack of Regulation
In some regions, there may be less regulation or oversight regarding insurance coverage for couples’ therapy compared to individual therapy. Insurers may have more discretion in determining what types of therapy they cover and under what circumstances.

  • Preventive vs. Treatment Focus
Insurance companies tend to prioritize treatments that directly address diagnosable conditions or illnesses. While couples therapy can be, preventative and promote healthier relationships, insurers may not view it as a medical treatment in the same way they do individual therapy for mental health disorders.
